Demand immediate justice for Black farmers

Apr 01 2009

For more than a generation, managers at the US Department of Agriculture systematically denied Black farmers loans and grants easily approved for White farmers. Many Black farming families lost their land and livelihoods as a result.

The farmers sued the USDA and won a landmark discrimination settlement that was reopened in 2008. But Senate Republicans have prevented the settlement from being funded. Please join us in calling on President Obama to bypass Republican obstruction and finally do right by these Black farmers.

UPDATE: In November 2010, the Senate approved $1.25 billion in funding for Pigford II. That vote cleared what has been the biggest hurdle to justice for these farmers — the funding had been brought up ten times before, only to see it blocked by obstruction from the right wing. The following month, President Obama signed the bill into law. The move came after more than 40,000 ColorOfChange members stood in support of the Black farmers.

This campaign has concluded.
