CNN: Dump Lou Dobbs

Lou Dobbs has a history of spreading false and misleading information that poisons conversations around race and immigration. Now he's using his radio and television shows to give legitimacy to bogus questions about President Obama's citizenship, and therefore eligibility to be president. It's a conspiracy theory designed to stoke racial paranoia, and it should have no place at an organization like CNN.

Join us in calling on CNN President Jonathan Klein to fire Dobbs now.

Dear Mr. Klein,

CNN is regarded by most people as a trustworthy news outlet committed to sound journalistic ethics, and it presents itself as such. However, the presence of Lou Dobbs raises the question of how committed it truly is.

Lou Dobbs has embarked on a campaign that goes against those ethics: effectively using the CNN brand to legitimize extremists' doubts about President Obama's citizenship, even after CNN's research department has debunked these baseless claims.

The "birther" conspiracy theory at its root is designed to stoke racial paranoia. Unfortunately, this is is not the first time that Dobbs has pushed false ideas; his obsession with the "birther" story seems to fit into a well-documented and disturbing pattern of distorting the facts and peddling falsehoods that inflame anti-immigrant sentiment.

What Lou Dobbs is doing is not responsible journalism. In my opinion, it has no place at a news organization like CNN. Please take him off the air immediately.

Sincerely,

[Your name]
