Call on your senator to support S. 1668

Help Katrina survivors come back home

Public housing residents have been blocked from returning home for over two years. The Gulf Coast Housing Recovery Act of 2007 (HR 1227 / S. 1668) would help them come home by repairing and opening thousands of minimally damaged public housing units. The bill passed in the House of Representatives, but some senators are standing in the way of the bill, supporting the interests of those who would like to see a richer, Whiter New Orleans and Gulf Coast.

Demand that your senator protect affordable housing in the Gulf Coast by supporting S. 1668 now.

Here is the text of the message we'll send to your senators, unless you create your own statement.

Dear Senator [senator's name],

I'm writing to urge you to support S. 1668, the Gulf Coast Hurricane Housing Recovery Act of 2007. It promises to reopen desperately needed public housing units and ensure that there is no loss of affordable public housing in New Orleans.

Public housing residents in New Orleans have been fighting for over two years to return to apartments that were minimally damaged by Hurricane Katrina. Despite the desperate need for housing, HUD plans to demolish thousands of affordable public housing units and replace them with mixed-income housing, resulting in far fewer total affordable housing units. This would effectively push thousands of New Orleans' public housing residents out of the city, perhaps permanently. S. 1668 would address this problem as well as provide other solutions to the Gulf Coast's affordable housing needs.

S. 1668 is urgently needed if the promise that everyone is welcomed home, regardless of race or class, is to be meaningful. I urge you to do everything in your power to support it.

Signed,
